Hi all
Has anyone got any herbal remedies for hay fever sufferers. I take conventional medication but would prefer to take something more natural.

Stinging nettles (do I hear a groan from the Garden folk?... "oh no, she's going to go on about nettles again" heehee - tis indeed one of my favourite herbs! so many uses...)
Stinging nettles are fabulous natural anti-histamines. Try drinking nettle tea (a dash of lemon juice and some local honey makes an even nicer nettle cuppa) but also use cooled nettle tea as a face wash, especially good around the eyes and nose, where pollen and dust can accumulate and irritate.
Other herbs you may like to try include chamomile - unless ragwort is one of your hayfever triggers.... and if you can get hold of proper local honey add a spoonful to your herbal brews, or indeed just to freshly boiled water (with optional dash of lemon juice). Delicious too
(I have a fresh batch of organically grown nettles in the GG shop, in the HERBS section, listed as Stinging Nettle) |

If you're picking your own nettles make sure you only pick the young fresh tips! avoid the darker, older leaves as these tend to have crystals in them.
A handy way to collect them : If you have a basket to hand, lean the basket into the nettles and snip the tops off with sharp scissors, so that they fall in to the basket (Once they have wilted and started to dry they won't sting).
Happy nettle harvesting and eating/drinking! |
